We started with a waste problem on our own coast.

RainSpark Global Private Limited processes coconut husk into growing media at Byndoor, in Udupi district, Karnataka.

The company

Close to the husk, close to the port.

Coastal Udupi and Uttara Kannada grow coconut along nearly the whole shoreline. After copra and coconut water production, what remains is husk — heavy, bulky, slow to break down, and usually burned because there is nothing else to do with it.

Meanwhile, growers across India and abroad are moving off peat, and the substrate they are moving to is made from exactly that husk. Most of it is processed hundreds of kilometres away in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with the husk trucked out of Karnataka to get there.

RainSpark exists to close that gap on the coast where the material actually falls. We buy husk locally, process it at Byndoor, and ship finished substrate out — rather than exporting the raw material and importing the value back.

How we work

Four things we decided early.

Measure, then claim

Every consignment carries a certificate of analysis from our own lab. If a number is on the label, an instrument produced it on that batch.

Source close

Husk comes from the surrounding coastal belt. A short collection radius keeps the transport footprint honest and the money in the local economy.

Treat what we discharge

Wash water is saline by definition — it is carrying the salt we removed. It gets treated and recycled rather than put onto land.

Say what we don't have yet

Certifications get listed when they are granted. A pending application is described as pending.

Where we are

Building in phases, not in one leap.

We would rather run a smaller line properly than a larger one badly. Capacity grows as the buyer relationships and the husk supply chain prove themselves.

Plant build phases Phase one establishes the washed and dried block and grow bag line. Phase two adds year-round drying and higher automation. Phase three adds by-product lines. Byndoor

A town between the Ghats and the sea.

Byndoor sits at the northern end of Udupi district, where the coastal plain is narrowest between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. NH-66 runs through it — 6.2 km from our factory — the Konkan Railway stops here, and coconut is planted from the beach ridge back to the foothills.

For a substrate plant it is an unusually good address: raw material within a short haul in almost every direction, a national highway for domestic dispatch, and sea freight on both sides — New Mangalore Port to the south, operating today, and the upcoming Honnavar port to the north.
